A majority of higher education institutions manage and maintain an information service department. These departments are typically responsible for the planning, operation, support, maintenance, and continuous improvement of a university’s communication services. Some of these services include the learning management system (LMS), student information system (SIS), and portals and email systems.
Schools that have an in‑house syllabus management system must dedicate a technical team member to build the site, process data, and training faculty to use the syllabus tool, keep the information on the syllabus site up‑to‑date, answer technical questions, and maintain the content in the system.
Michigan State University is a perfect example of syllabus system that takes a lot of time and manpower to maintain. The Web Accessibility section has over nine pages of comprehensive content and examples of how to create, structure, and to maintain syllabi including demonstrating HTML code that faculty can use to get their syllabi online.
